Our Mission
The mission of the Marjot Foundation is to support independent research in environmental science by students in public high schools. We fund students in grades 9-11 to insure they have one full year in which to conduct their research. Thus far Marjot has supported 25 students from Maine, Massachusetts and Vermont who have investigated effects of contamination in the rivers, the impact of global warming on tree development, the growth of algae in estuaries, and many other important areas concerning environmental change.
The goal of the foundation is to encourage basic research and to introduce students to the process of writing proposals, defining research hypotheses, designing specific experiments, and carrying out field and/or laboratory work with the help of mentors. Students must compete in state science fairs and must present their work at the mid point to trustees, donors and members of the scientific advisory board. To emphasize accountability, they must also write a final report before they receive their full funding.
Where do these students go after high school? We already have one physician graduate from U. Mass Worcester medical school, students who have graduated from Bowdoin and U. Maine, students attending Brown, Haverford, MIT, Amherst, and the U Vermont, to name a few.
Marjot has been and will continue to be totally funded by private contributions from individuals and from corporations. We are a 501c3 entity based in the Commonwealth of Masschusetts.
